Commission OKs parts of Anthem community

Del Webb's master-planned community, Anthem, took another step toward completion Thursday as the Henderson Planning Commission approved plans for part of the community and its commercial subdivision.

Planners voted 5-0 in favor of changes to Anthem's comprehensive plan amendment and existing zoning on about 2,500 acres and approved the subdivision of one lot on 28.1 acres.

The 2,500-plus acres approved by planners Thursday is located at Eastern Avenue and Anthem Parkway, and will also include a community center, library, middle school, public park and bike trails.

The commercial subdivision, to be located on the northeast corner of Eastern Avenue and Reunion Drive, includes 19 buildings totaling 236,000 square feet, which raised a few concerns from commissioners because of the size of the commercial space.

"I just see 230,000 feet of commercial development," Commission Vice-Chairman George Bochanis said, while adding that the subdivision would have to go before the panel again if there were any substantial changes to the current plans.

Ed Lubbers, representing Del Webb, said after the meeting that he feels the Anthem development will bring nothing but benefits to the city of Henderson.

"It (Anthem) is going to bring tremendous tax revenue to the city, along with jobs and people," Lubbers said. "In approving it tonight, they acknowledged that it is definitely in the best interests of the city."
