An international building materials company has acquired a granite quarrying operation in Southern Nevada.
Hanson Building Materials America, a subsidiary of Hanson PLC, London, bought Lopke Granite Products Inc. for $11.2 million in cash.
The Lopke operation will provide an additional 80 million tons of granite aggregate reserves for Hanson, which controls by ownership or long-term lease more than 7 billion tons of aggregate reserves.
John Price, vice president and general manager of Hanson Aggregates Las Vegas, said the property is located between Boulder City and Henderson across U.S. 95 from Railroad Pass. About 15 employees work at the Eldorado Quarry, where stone is blasted from the face of a mountain and crushed into aggregate. Most materials are used in local projects.
Price said the company, formerly known as Bonanza Materials, owns a second plant on Stephanie Street in Henderson. Bonanza was acquired by the Lopke family of New York, which sold to Hanson last month. Hanson decided to use its corporate name on all its worldwide holdings beginning in January, Price said.
Hanson is one of the largest producers of aggregates, ready-mix concrete and hot-mix asphalt in Las Vegas. It is the third largest producer of construction aggregates in the United States and the second largest in Europe. The company also is one of Britain's largest brick producers.
