Brief: Governor suggests legalization of video gaming

There are many illegal video poker machines in the state already and law enforcement is reluctant to devote resources to removing the slots. Thompson said the worst thing about the situation is the uneven way video gaming is being regulated.

Thompson said the Legislature should legalize the machines and make them part of the state lottery so they can be regulated and taxed.

Just last month charges were dropped against Thompson's brother, who had been accused of operating video poker machines in his tavern. The charges were dropped when potential jurors indicated it was unfair the gaming devices were allowed in Indian casinos but not in non-Indian businesses.
