Fishing Reports -- January 6

LAKE MEAD: Even though winter is not the best season for catching fish, anglers will enjoy some success if they are persistent. Although a few striped bass are still prowling the lake's surface, most are concentrated in deep water. The best method for catching fish is to drop bait into a school of stripers. If the fish fail to bite, anglers should move to another school. Stripers are being found in Government Wash, Las Vegas Wash and the Muddy River. Only one striper was caught following last week's trout plant at Hemenway Harbor. Largemouth bass fishing has also slowed for the winter season. The fish are being found at depths of 20 feet or more. The Nevada Division of Wildlife is scheduled to stock rainbow trout Friday at Government Wash, B-5 Cove, Hemenway Harbor and Horsepower Cove.

LAKE MOHAVE: A large number of anglers found their way to the lake following last week's trout plants, but only one large striped bass was caught. Boaters who have been fishing from Cottonwood Cove to Owl's Point have caught a small number of stripers that range from 1 to 2 pounds. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is scheduled to stock 3,700 rainbow trout Thursday at Willow Beach.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Very cold winter weather and poor fishing for stocked rainbow trout are being found at the Lincoln County state park. Most of the lake is covered with ice, but much of it is unsafe for ice fishing. The better ice conditions are around the boat dock.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: The lake is covered with ice that is approximately three inches thick. No anglers have been seen at the reservoir during the past week.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: The lakes are covered with ice that ranges from three to four inches thick. Anglers should use caution because of the relatively thin conditions. Two anglers who were fishing through the ice on Dec. 31 had success at Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs for rainbow trout that weighed up to 2 pounds. But the following day they only managed to catch a few small trout.
