Officials planning for big millennium party

"Our goal is to make sure that all the rooms are packed for 1999," said Rob Powers, spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The LVCVA met Tuesday morning with about 20 representatives from the resort and tourism industry, local government and law enforcement to discuss how to market Las Vegas this year.

Powers said officials don't just want tourists to come to Las Vegas on New Year's Eve, but all year long.

"The millennium is more than just New Year's Eve 1999. It's how to really capitalize on all the interest on the millennium throughout this year," he said.

The LVCVA wants to market all the city's millennium activities together, Powers said.

"It's a marketing tool to get people thinking about Las Vegas long before New Year's Eve 1999 and long after New Year's Eve 1999," he said.

The group will meet again on Feb. 2 when a millennium logo and slogan will likely be unveiled.
