Longtime UNLV professor Loveday dies

Paul Loveday spent much of his life as a mentor for UNLV students, often working with them individually as they pondered career choices.

As chairman of the Department of Management for 16 years, Loveday earned a reputation for being accessible. He retired in 1990, but his helpful nature remains as a memory for one person who knew him.

"One thing he prided himself on," said John Kohl, current chairman of the department, "was an open-door policy for his students. Paul was very passionate about helping his students and he was always available to them and to the faculty."

Loveday died Saturday from complications of emphysema. He was 77.

Loveday first came to UNLV in 1969 after 11 years at the University of Arizona. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Omaha, and his master's and doctorate from the University of Arizona.

In 1972, Loveday was named chairman of the Department of Management and held that post until 1988. During that time, he also served as director of the UNLV's Small Business Administration program.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Loveday served in the Army, rising to the rank of captain.

Kohl credits Loveday with the success of the College of Business because he was such a "student-professor."

"He was such a neat person because he had done so many things in the course of his life, like serving in the war. One of the things that came from that was that he was very hard-working," Kohl said. "He was a very good mentor in terms of trying to guide people's careers."

A memorial reception for family and friends will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Legacy Legends Clubhouse, 2251 Wigwam Parkway in Henderson.

Graveside services for family and close friends will be at 9:10 a.m. Monday at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.

An on-campus memorial will be held Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.

The family requests donations be made to the Paul Loveday Memorial Fund through the UNLV Foundation.

Loveday is survived by his wife, Jane, of Henderson.
