Cheyenne standout Hunter will still attend Georgetown

Cheyenne High School guard Demetrius Hunter said Thursday that John Thompson's retirement will not affect his decision to attend Georgetown University next season.

"At first I was a little disappointed," said Hunter, who received a phone call from the longtime Hoyas coach informing him of the news. "But when he told me what was going on, I understood.

"They've still got the same coaching staff, and Coach Thompson is still going to be around the program," Hunter added.

The 6-2 combo guard signed with the Big East school in October after initially making a verbal commitment to Pepperdine. Although he admitted Thompson's presence was a major reason for his decision, he said he would not try to back out.

"He was a big factor, but I'm still going to go," Hunter said. "I could probably get out if I wanted to, but I don't want to."

Generally considered one of the top two senior basketball players in Nevada, Hunter is the 74th rated senior in the country according to Bob Gibbons' latest All Star Sports report.

After averaging nearly 16 points as a junior last year, Hunter is scoring at a 23 point-per-game clip this winter. He also is averaging nearly four rebounds and four assists for the 13-3 Desert Shields, the state's No. 1 team in this week's Sun top 10 poll.
