Last month's slaughter of the free-roaming mustangs is the worst in Nevada since several hundred were shot over a two-year period during the mid-1980s. Contributions to a reward fund have reached $37,500.

Several young colts and pregnant mares were among those shot multiple times with a high-powered rifle when they were found the Sunday after Christmas.

Lee said 29 horses were dead and five more had to be destroyed. One of those may have been ill rather than wounded.

Lee said some suspects are emerging and the sheriff's crime lab has processed the last of its evidence and will present its findings to investigators on Friday.

None of the information will leave the briefing room.
