Forest Service to investigate why Lost Cabin was torn down

Forest Service spokeswoman Dee Gardner said Friday the investigation would focus on why a special firefighting team from Black Mountain near Carson City razed the cabin in summer 1997 after the Forest Service saved it from a fire in 1996.

"Most important is how this occurred and how we can prevent this from happening again," Ms. Garner said. She said the inquiry would try to resolve the age of the cabin "and take some corrective measures on what occurred."

Archaeologists discovered the cabin had been destroyed while they were on a field trip in November.

The cabin, which was located 10 miles northwest of Mount Potosi off state Route 160 in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, was one of two shelters built by Buster Wilson or his legendary father, Tweed, who provided food and supplies to miners south of the mountains.
