Regents decide college should keep Raggio's name

Regent David Phillips had asked to take the majority leader's name off the center after some people said they wanted it named after a Clark County legislator or educator.

Raggio is from Reno.

Phillips' motion died Friday after no regent agreed to reconsider the naming.

Raggio, who had asked that his name be removed when the controversy broke, said he appreciated the good will of university regents.

The college-run center is set to open next week on the campus of Western High School. High school students will use the building in the mornings, and college students will use the computers and classrooms in the afternoons and evenings.

Because of the controversy and embarrassment to Raggio, the Board of Regents is expected in February to consider adopting a policy against naming buildings in honor of sitting politicians.
