Brief: Mirage, Venetian want to link with bridge

Wynn's Mirage Resorts and Adelson's Venetian hotel-casino are asking planners for variances that would allow them to build a pedestrian bridge connecting Mirage's Mirage and Treasure Island hotel-casinos to the Venetian. The bridge over the Las Vegas Strip would be built entirely with private funds.

However, the county's planning staff is recommending denial of the proposal, citing the planned bridge's distance from any major street intersection.

"Staff cannot support this application because staff finds no legal hardship and because of the bridge's distance from major street intersections," states a planning staff report.

Bridges should only be approved when a traffic analysis finds they are necessary, states the report.

To date, four publicly-funded and four privately-funded pedestrian bridges have been approved for the Strip. However, a proposed privately-funded bridge that would connect the Flamingo Hilton and Caesar's Palace hotel-casinos was denied by the Board of County Commissioners in December. The properties have sued the county over that denial.
