Letter: Water ignored in editorial

Traffic jams, lack of playgrounds and schools are inconveniences when compared to the lack of water. The basic requirements for life on this planet are air (oxygen for breathing), water and food. The Southern Nevada Water Authority has had some effect in water conservation in their program, and small efforts have been made by the city of Las Vegas Parks, plus a few private concerns.

However, until an all out effort by the entire community, based on solid guidance provided by the local government entities is established, we will all be having our "cup of sand" to drink in another 10 years.

The acquisition of the well by Las Vegas in northern Clark County is a momentary stopgap measure that will not resolve the problem.

A team effort requires all members to work together, just as all of the team of the Las Vegas Valley must unite for the preservation of the good life we enjoy in this area.

If the predictions of the experts (National Climate Data Center) are correct, the summer of '99 will bring another visit from El Nino, only this time he will be stronger and require more water to keep our valley green. "Start Planning to Start Saving" could be an appropriate slogan for the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition.
