Brief: Profits up for Del Webb, Kaufman and Broad

Del Webb Corp. of Phoenix today reported earnings of $13.5 million, or 72 cents per share, for its second quarter ended Dec. 31. That's up from $11.3 million, or 62 cents in the year-ago quarter.

Revenues increased 27 percent to $354.2 million and net new orders increased 28 percent. In Las Vegas, Del Webb reported 435 new orders in the quarter, up from 311 in the year-ago period. The company is winding down business at Sun City Summerlin and shifting its attention to its new Anthem community near Henderson.

Separately, Kaufman and Broad Home Corp. of Los Angeles said it earned $41.8 million, or $1.02 per share in the quarter ending Nov. 30. That's up from $27.9 million or 69 cents in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue increased 28 percent to $826.6 million.

Kaufman and Broad completed its purchase of the Lewis Homes group on Jan. 7, making it the largest homebuilder in Nevada. The Lewis operations are expected to deliver 3,500 homes this year in California and Nevada.
