Suspects in Candy Lady killing accuse each other of shooting

Two teenagers charged in the murders of a woman known as the "Candy Lady" and her male friend have named each other as the shooter, testimony indicated in the second day of a preliminary hearing Friday for the two.

The conclusion of the hearing was postponed until Feb. 5 by Justice of the Peace Jennifer Togliatti to allow time for legal briefs to be filed by attorneys in the case.

Flora Johnson, 86, and Azel Evans, 71, were shot to death during an apparent robbery in their home at 832 Blankenship Ave., near H Street, on Sept. 23.

Shauntay Weaton, 15, and DeAngelo Michell, 16, were captured a short distance away. Each faces two counts of first-degree murder. Despite being juveniles, they are charged as adults under Nevada law.

Johnson was called the "Candy Lady" because she sold candy, sodas and ice cream to neighborhood children although, at age 86, she was half-blind and barely able to walk with the use of a cane.

During Friday's testimony, Metro Police homicide Det. David Mesinar told the judge that both defendants gave statements after their arrests and admitted being at the murder scene, but both said the other was the actual triggerman.
