Bill creating area councils proposed

The Las Vegas City Council will consider a bill providing for the establishment of neighborhood councils within the city.

The councils are proposed to advise city government on matters concerning the general health, safety and welfare of their neighborhoods. They will also assist in setting goals and objectives reflecting the growth needs for their neighborhood.

The city staff is estimating 12 such councils will cost $60,000.

LVFD gets grant for coronary care

The Las Vegas Fire Department has received a $98,403 grant from the National Library of Medicine for research to develop a new program to treat heart attack victims in the field.

The City Council accepted the federal grant at its meeting Monday.

Dr. Steven Karch, the department's medical director, applied for the grant for a project to promote the use of advanced computer technology to improve the survival rates of heart attack victims if administered shortly after the onset of the attack.

Quality-of-life strategy approved

A strategic plan outlining strategies for handling growth, quality of life and finance in the city of Las Vegas was approved Monday by the City Council.

The blueprint is seen as a vision for the future and was developed with input from city staff, residents and elected leaders.

City Manager Virginia Valentine said the plan will be tied to the budget process so that the main goals will have a funding source.

City seeks parcels in northwest area

The City Council introduced several bills at its meeting Monday to annex land from the county into the city limits.

One such annexation involves 77.28 acres on the north side of Iron Mountain Road between Fort Apache Road and El Capital Way. Another involves 42.06 acres north of Centennial Parkway between Buffalo Drive and Tenaya Way.
