Tonia Cunning named executive editor of Reno Gazette-Journal

Ms. Cunning, 49, succeeds Ward Bushee, who left the newspaper earlier this month to become editor/vice president of The Cincinnati Enquirer, one of the largest newspapers owned by Gannett Co. Inc., which also owns the Reno newspaper.

Her promotion was announced Monday.

Ms. Cunning "understands the community and cares deeply about it," Publisher Sue Clark-Johnson said. "She's been an integral part of everything the Reno Gazette-Journal has done so well during the seven years she was managing editor, and I can think of no one more fitting to assume the newsroom leadership role."

Ms. Cunning began her journalism career as a society writer for the Nevada State Journal in 1971 and continued with the newspaper after it merged with the Reno Evening Gazette in 1983.

Ms. Cunning has spent most of her life in Nevada. She is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, and is president of the Nevada Press Association.

"After living in the Reno area for 47 years, I cannot think of a better place I'd like to continue to work and call home," she said. "I look forward to the challenge this new position will provide and the opportunity to work with folks in the community and in our newsroom."
