Miller, Taranik named to Newmont board

Miller, 51, Nevada's longest-serving governor, concluded 10 years in office when newly-elected Republican Gov. Kenny Guinn was sworn in Jan. 4.

Taranik 57, is the founder and past president of the Desert Research Institute at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he still teaches geology and geophysics.

Also named to the board was Robert Quenon, a mining consultant and former president and chief executive of Peabody Holding Co. Quenon, 69, is also past president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Taranik and Quenon previously served as directors of Newmont Gold Co. when it was a publicly traded company. Last October, Newmont Mining acquired the outstanding shares of Newmont Gold, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary.

The appointments were announced from Newmont's headquarters in Denver.
