Thompson quits post as chief of health-care financing

CARSON CITY -- Chris Thompson, who helped devise the "Medicaid Miracle" plan that brought Nevada hundreds of millions of extra dollars from the federal government, has resigned as chief of the state Division of Health Care Financing and Policy.
Thompson, who has headed the agency since its creation two years ago, is leaving the $82,000-a-year job for personal and family health reasons.
He played a major role in development of the 1991 Medicaid tax and an intergovernmental transfer program that generated more than $300 million in federal funds for health projects since 1992.
His division drafted "Nevada Check-Up," a program in which children of the working poor receive health insurance for a minimal premium.
