Bette Midler signed for Vegas shows

The resort and Evening Star Productions announced Thursday that Bette Midler will perform two shows here - on New Year's Eve and Jan. 1, 2000.

"She's appropriate for the biggest New Year's Eve celebration in 1,000 years," Mandalay Bay spokesman Bill Doak said in announcing the holiday engagement.

"We expect her to put on the hottest high energy show to be found on New Year's Eve," Doak said. "She's that kind of star, a fun, high-energy, up-tempo performer who matches a premier New Year's Eve event."

Midler will perform at the resort's 12,000-seat events center. Tickets are priced at $500, $300 and $95 New Year's Eve, $500, $200 and $95 on New Year's Day. Both shows begin at 9 p.m. PST.

The 3,300-room resort, which opened in March, is selling three-night room packages for the holiday at $1,000 a night.

Midler has been recording since the early 1970s, with her major hits including "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "From A Distance."

Her recent HBO special, "Diva Las Vegas," received 10 Emmy nominations. She recently released a new CD album, "Bathhouse Betty."
