Editorial: New councilwoman ushers in a change

Oscar Goodman naturally captured the spotlight Monday when he was sworn in as mayor of Las Vegas, but we would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the City Council's appointment of Lynette Boggs McDonald to replace Arnie Adamsen on the City Council.

Considering there are four women on the seven-member Clark County Commission and 23 of Nevada's 63 state legislators are women, many were surprised to discover that McDonald became the first Las Vegas city councilwoman (while Jan Laverty Jones had a vote on the council, she was mayor and technically not a councilwoman).

McDonald's election bid for a state Assembly seat last year was unsuccessful, but the Sun editorial board endorsed her, believing that she was one of the best candidates seeking election to the Nevada Legislature. The City Council made a wise decision when it named McDonald. It is hoped her enthusiasm and intelligence make a difference.
