June was month of extremes across Nevada

The first week of the month brought unusually cold and snowy conditions to much of Nevada.

Belmont, north of Tonoph, reported 8 inches of snow, while Minden south of Carson City had 4 inches. Reno, on the other hand, saw nary a flake on the same day.

The entire month was unusually dry in Reno, where 0.06 inch of moisture fell. That's below the average monthly precipitation amount of nearly one-half inch, James said Thursday.

Temperatures statewide were about normal for the month. Reno was 2.2 degrees above normal, while Las Vegas was one-half degree above normal.

James said with nine months of the water year over, more than half of Nevada stands at below normal when it comes to precipitation.

The exceptions are central and northeastern portions of the state and along the east slopes of the Sierra, where precipitation is above normal.

In contrast, he said southern Nevada some valleys in western Nevada, including Reno, Yerington, Wadsworth and Las Vegas, were very dry. Precipitation those places was about half of normal, he said.

While June started out chilly and ended with above normal temperatures, the extremes did not approach June records of 125 degrees on June 29, 1994 in Laughlin or the record low of 8 degrees set in Belmont on June 1, 1891, James said.
