LV electricity use soars during heat spell

Wednesday's 112-degree weather in the Las Vegas area led to record electricity deliveries by Nevada Power Co. as air conditioning units worked overtime.
Nevada Power said the heat, combined with growth in its customer count, caused it to reach a new record system peak of 3,933 megawatts at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The 1998 system peak occurred on Tuesday, July 17, at 4 p.m. with a recording of 3,855 megawatts.
Nevada Power said it has plenty of electricity to meet the summer demand in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, where it serves 1.4 million residents.
