Letter: 'People' left out of column's focus

I was reintroduced to the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, its articles, amendments, and most importantly, the people behind these famous documents for who they represent, the people of the United States of America.

Greenspun's myopic focus entirely on the militia entirely avoided the very essence of these documents, to serve the people. The belief that all should serve the state is totalitarian, not democratic.

He neglected to mention that the people also have the right to keep and bear arms. We the people make the government, not the political hierarchy of our government.

In conclusion, Greenspun has every right to call for more government to regulate the militia, and "regulate it well."

This is the same thinking, more regulations upon the people, that King George had when he tried to control and impose imperious laws upon the colonists. These laws, of course, led to the revolution.

So everyone, dust off your history books and re-familiarize yourself with the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and its amendments, and most importantly, your inalienable rights as a citizen of the United States of America!
