Post-Independence Day fireworks illegal

Residents looking to light any leftover fireworks from their Four of July celebrations could face stiff fines if spotted by authorities.

The end of the holiday at midnight Sunday was also the end of a weeklong window that allows fireworks to be purchased and set off in Clark County.

"Fireworks are only legal in the county from June 28 through July 4, and at all other times they are illegal," Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. "All fireworks are now illegal in the county until next year."

Those lighting fireworks now could face up to $1,000 fines.

Last year 500 pounds of illegal fireworks were confiscated and there were 10 fires in the city at least partially caused by fireworks. An estimate of confiscated fireworks this year was not available this morning.

Szymanski said he suspects the number of fireworks-related fires is up this year, but "the number of calls and complaints (about fireworks) wasn't as bad as it was last year."

This year's biggest fireworks-related fire caused $90,000 in damage to three houses in the area of Charleston Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive on Thursday.

Another fire on Sunday damaged a duplex in eastern Las Vegas. The fire broke out just before 4 p.m. in the 4000 block of Bingham Avenue, near Bonanza Road and Lamb Boulevard. Investigators found used fireworks near the damaged duplex.

The fire caused an estimated $70,000 in damage, Szymanski said.
