Anderes to be recommended for interim chancellor job

CARSON CITY -- Tom Anderes, vice chancellor for finance and planning, will be recommended to become interim chancellor of the University and Community College System of Nevada at the July 13 meeting of the Board of Regents.

Board Chairwoman Jill Derby said today that Anderes, 49, who has held his current job since 1994, is "widely respected not only by the board, but by the presidents (of the campuses) and throughout the system."

Derby said she and vice chairwoman Thalia Dondero decided to forward the recommendation of Anderes to succeed Richard Jarvis, who announced he is resigning Aug. 31.

She said Anderes has worked closely with Jane Nichols, the vice chancellor of academics. "This would be a nice team," she said.

After the embattled Jarvis announced his resignation, board members roundly praised Anderes, who emerged as the favorite for the caretaker role. Derby said it would be up to the board to make the final decision. It meets in special session in Las Vegas.

She said she is still working on the terms of the appointment.

The board will also be asked to hire a consultant to conduct a study and help the regents in deciding what they want in the new permanent chancellor. "We're not going to rush into this," Derby said, referring to the selection of a permanent person.

The board, she said, must decide what qualities it wants in the new chancellor and the duties that will be required of him. There's an annual board workshop in November, Derby said. And at that meeting, the board may set the qualifications it is looking for.

She is recommending the board "get help from outside" in defining the role of the chancellor in relationship to the board and presidents.

The board, at its meeting, will also be presented with a resolution to honor Jarvis, who is quitting his $208,000 a year job to become the first chancellor of the newly created United States Open University in Washington, D.C. -- which is affiliated with the 30-year-old Open University based in England.

The July 13 board meeting was originally scheduled to evaluate the job performance of Jarvis, who has been criticized by some regents from Southern Nevada who complained he did not pay enough attention to narrowing the disparity in funding between schools in Clark County and those in Northern Nevada.

Anderes has indicated he would be interested in the job permanently. After the Jarvis announcement, Anderes said, "I've been a vice chancellor for 11 years between the University of Connecticut and here. Obviously the next step for me is chancellor or president or something of that nature."

But he said he first wants to see how the board defines the job.

Anderes was deputy commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Higher Education; deputy vice president for finance at the University of Wyoming and held positions in finance and administration at Arizona State University, the University of Connecticut and in the governor's budget office in Arizona.
