Chlorinating facility approved

The North Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved the construction of a water chlorinating facility at Lake Mead Boulevard and Simmons Street after a resident withdrew her complaints that the Twin Lakes Pumping Plant was stinking up her neighborhood.

The Planning Commission had approved the chlorination facility in May.

Debra and Marcus Coreen, who live in the neighborhood, appealed the approval, saying they were worried that the plant was causing a rotten-egg smell.

When city officials investigated they found that the odor was coming from the Texas Station hotel-casino. Bacteria had been placed in the hotel's grease trap to clean it out, resulting in a sulfur smell.

Texas Station has cleaned out the grease trap, and the neighborhood is odor-free, Coreen said.

"We're pleased that the odor has been taken care of," Coreen said.
