Defeated council candidate named to planning panel

A former North Las Vegas City Council candidate was appointed Wednesday to fill a vacancy on the Planning Commission.

The City Council voted unanimously 5-0 to appoint Laura Perkins, 34, to serve a two-year term on the Planning Commission.

Perkins' demeanor during her failed run for office so impressed Councilwoman Stephanie Smith that she recommended Perkins for the Planning Commission job.

Perkins will bring a fresh point of view to the planning meetings, Smith said.

"I think she has good ideas and she's well educated (and) articulate," Smith said. "She's from the community and she's involved. I think that's what it takes."

Perkins, a former Frontier Girl Scout leader, is a native of North Las Vegas and believes her level of commitment to the city will be important for future growth.

"I've seen the city grow and change, and I want to see it continue in positive growth," Perkins said. "I want North Las Vegas to keep the personality it has. There are a lot of positives, and I want to key in on those and bring them out."

Perkins has an education degree from UNLV and currently works as program assistant at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Perkins' two-year term is set to expire with Smith's on June 30, 2001.
