Letter: Reagan's legacy of greed will last for generations

At the core of "Reaganomics" was the theory of "trickle-down economics" as articulated by Jack Kemp and others as part of his "supply side" pitch.

This was the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people. Reagan's implementation of that theory resulted in our huge national debt today.

But more significantly, it had a moral impact on our nation which will last for generations.

The byword of the theory was "greed" and "greed" became the keystone of the hedonistic society in which we unfortunately live today. While the theory may have sounded good, it further separated the gap between the haves and the have-nots, the rich and the poor.

People care less about their neighbor and more about their Mercedes and/or the size of their mansions.

Where is the caring for our fellow man? Listeners to talk shows express more concern about the expenditures in the war in Yugoslavia, and/or what happened today on Wall Street than they care about the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.

The Republicans are more concerned about a tax cut than they are about the care of the aged in this nation.

They forget that the World War II generation was the one that made this nation great, not the Wall Streeters.

I know we are in real trouble as a nation when I hear all of the Republican candidates trying to wrap themselves in the mantle and glory (?) of Ronald Reagan.
