Letter: Reagan took debt to new heights

The amount appropriated is largely driven by the budgetary requirements submitted by the president. As such, the president plays a central leadership role in the planning, programming and budgeting cycle. Over the eight years of his presidency, Ronald Reagan's budget submissions were $16.1 billion more than was actually passed into law.

Though Congress cannot escape blame, the single individual most responsible for the national debt was President Reagan.
