Paul Haskell Spicher, 39, pleaded guilty Friday to four counts of sexual assault with a minor under the age of 14.
His trial had been scheduled to start Monday. District Judge Sally Loehrer will sentence Spicher on Sept. 20.
Each of the four counts carries a life sentence with parole eligibility after 20 years.
Police have said that on July 15, 1998, Spicher knocked on the door of a home, asked a 12-year-old girl for directions, then left. A man returned 20 minutes later and forced his way into the residence.
The girl was tied up and sexually assaulted. Money and jewelry were taken from the home, authorities said.
Prosecutors said DNA evidence linked Spicher to the crime.
