Men trying to save friend shot in buttocks get trip to jail

The two who carjacked a woman's vehicle to take their wounded friend to the hospital weren't exactly Good Samaritans, Las Vegas police said.

It all started when a long-standing argument over who owned a gold ring turned into a gunfight Thursday. The gunman put eight 9 mm rounds into the buttocks of a reputed drug dealer and then drove away.

The wounded man, who police said was carrying a substantial amount of rock cocaine, and his friends weren't keen on calling police.

"So they stole a lady's car when she wouldn't help them take their friend to a hospital," police Sgt. Jim Young said.

He said they yanked the woman and her toddler out of the car and drove their friend to Lake Mead Hospital Medical Center.

A police officer happened to notice the car speeding and turned on his lights for a routine traffic stop. The stolen car didn't stop. As it sped away, about 15 to 20 parcels of rock cocaine wrapped in cellophane began to fly out the car's window, Young said.

Dennis Fikes, 40, and Vern Standifer, 36, were arrested at the hospital on robbery charges. Police are still looking for the man who fired the shots.

The shooting victim was transferred to University Medical Center where he was in fair condition Friday.
