City Council says farewell to Adamsen

The "out with the old, in with the new" era began unofficially at Monday's Las Vegas City Council meeting as two departing public servants received honors and Mayor-elect Oscar Goodman attended to see what to expect when he is sworn in June 28.

Councilman Arnie Adamsen, who will have to resign his seat June 28 because of his decision to run for mayor, was honored with a plaque and standing ovation.

"He exemplifies what public service is all about," Mayor Jan Laverty Jones said. "He's never walked away from a fight or a challenge."

Adamsen thanked those in attendance and those watching on live television for the "privilege and honor of having been able to serve."

Goodman said he felt humbled to have defeated "worthy opponent" Adamsen in the June 8 general election.

"I feel honored to have been elected mayor of this great city," Goodman said. "Arnie ran a good, tough race."

Councilman Gary Reese offered Adamsen a simple "thanks" while Mayor Pro Tem Michael McDonald called him a "class act." Councilman Larry Brown, who lost to Adamsen in a 1989 council race, joked that he deserved some of the credit for the start of Adamsen's 12-year run.

Jones also received honors Monday from the Southern Nevada Homeless Coalition for her dedication to homeless issues.
