Flamingo Hilton chief retires

Horst Dziura, long one of the most successful casino operators on the Las Vegas Strip, has retired as president of the Flamingo Hilton.

Since taking over the reins at the Flamingo Hilton in 1976, Dziura has consistently made it one of the best-performing hotel-casinos in town. The hotel has often generated the highest room-occupancy rates on the Strip.

His hands-on management style, strict attention to detail and ability to attract repeat tour-and-travel business by offering fine dining and good service made Dziura a respected figure among his industry peers.

Dziura announced his plans at a staff meeting Tuesday, leaving many of his associates "in shock," said one executive who attended the session.

"There's a time for everything," Dziura said today. "I've been here a long, long time, and we've accomplished a lot here, but it's time to stop and smell the roses."

Dziura said he remains a consultant at the Flamingo and will spend time traveling between his homes in Las Vegas and Santa Barbara.

Flamingo Hilton owner Park Place Entertainment said Tony Santo, currently president of the Reno Hilton and the Flamingo Reno, will assume Dziura's position in Las Vegas.
