Fine, Miller likely to join mayor’s race

The race for Las Vegas mayor will be crowded when filing for the election ends Friday afternoon.

Developer Mark Fine and former City Councilman Steve Miller both plan to file the paper work and fees for official candidacies Friday.

Fine, who has been active in government committees and is known for his role in developing Summerlin, has been bolstered in recent weeks by strong polls and fund-raising efforts.

Front runners Jay Bingham and Arnie Adamsen both said they welcomed Fine's competition.

"That's what makes this a good country," said Bingham, a local developer and former chairman of the Clark County Commission. "I look forward to a good exchange of ideas."

Despite another developer entering the race, Bingham said it would not effect the way he campaigns or raises funds.

Adamsen, who seemed nonplussed by Fine's decision, maintains that his years of experience on City Council will sway voters to his side.

"The more the merrier," Adamsen said. "If I have two developers in the race against me, the more the merrier."

On Wednesday, City Hall watcher Tom McGowan -- known for his garbled speeches before the council during televised meetings -- also filed his candidacy for mayor.

Cruz Olague, who was mayor of Henderson for two years in the 1970s, and West Las Vegan Anthony Snowden also have filed candidacies for mayor.
