Cable company to offer online bill payments

Cox Communications customers nationwide will be able to review their monthly statements and pay their bills via computer beginning in September.

Cox will join several Las Vegas companies offering online billing.

"As service providers, we're always looking for ways to make things easier for customers," said Steve Schorr, a vice president for Cox in Las Vegas.

Schorr said Atlanta-based Cox will work with local banks to make the online billing service available to Las Vegas customers.

Cox is working with CheckFree, an Atlanta company, to develop the Internet billing system, which would work in two ways. Customers could pay their bills through a CheckFree Web site called E-Bill, located at www.mybills.com/ebill. Or they could pay bills through electronic banking software such as Quicken or Microsoft Money.

Cox has 3.8 million customers nationwide and about 310,000 subscribers in Las Vegas.

Nevada Power Co. offers online billing and payment options for its Las Vegas customers. Southwest Gas Co. offers direct payment through banking institutions and is developing Internet access to statements. Sprint also is developing online billing and payment plans for its telephone customers.
