Gaming companies donate to research effort

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Gaming Entertainment Research and Education Foundation (GEREF) today announced new gaming industry funding commitments of $1.95 million.

This brings the amount pledged by the casino industry to nearly $7 million since 1996, GEREF said.

GEREF said the money will finance problem gambling research through the National Center for Responsible Gaming.

GEREF said these donors renewed their annual contributions of $10,000 for three years: Harrah's Entertainment, International Game Technology, the Lincy Foundation (MGM Grand), Circus Circus Enterprises and Mirage Resorts.

Also, Park Place Entertainment pledged a total of $45,000 through 2002.

The founding donors, Boyd Gaming and Station Casinos, had earlier made 10-year commitments.

Other donors include Aztar, Boomtown, Casino Data Systems, Empress Riverboat Casinos, Foxwoods Resort, Harveys Casino Resorts, Hollywood Casino Corp., Horseshoe Gaming, JCM American, Mission Industries, Mohegan Sun, Shuffle Master and Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada.

Paul Harvey, chairman of GEREF, said the group plans to broaden its fund-raising efforts to include all segments of the gaming industry.
