Gorman baseball coach quits, moves to community college

Bishop Gorman's Tim Chambers has resigned his position as the Gaels' head baseball coach, effective at the end of the 1999 season, to take a position at the Community College of Southern Nevada.

For now, Chambers will serve as one of the school's interim baseball coaches, along with UNLV assistant coach M.J. Mariani and Las Vegas Baseball Academy owner Mike Martin. That threesome will oversee the school's baseball program until CCSN Athletic Director Mike Meyer hires a replacement for Rodger Fairless, who resigned Tuesday after just seven weeks on the job.

Chambers, who was a candidate during the school's initial coaching search, said he will pursue the head coaching position again.

"I'm resigning to put all my focus into overseeing the program and interviewing for the (head) job," Chambers said. "I've always wanted to be a college coach, and I hope I get the job. After seeing the direction the school is going to go, I'm more interested than ever."

Chambers, who led the Gaels to appearances in the 4A state tournament last spring and the American Legion World Series last summer, said his players were "100 percent behind him" when he informed them of his decision at Wednesday's practice.

Fairless, who left his coaching position at Green Valley to take the CCSN position earlier this spring, cited health as the primary reason for his resignation on Tuesday.
