Five officers memorialized at annual Reno ceremony

The officers' names on Friday were added to the James D. Hoff Peace Officers Memorial during the 12th annual ceremony at Idlewild Park.

Three of the officers remembered died last year.

Edward Ronald Callahan, a Douglas County sheriff's deputy, drowned at Lake Tahoe when the dinghy he was riding in capsized.

Russell Peterson, of Las Vegas Metro Police, was a member of a search and rescue team. He died when a huge slab of ice broke loose and fell on him during an ice climbing training exercise on Mount Charleston.

Jack Lee Spencer, a veteran of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Carson City, was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 while on duty.

Also honored was Thomas Allen Burner of the University of Nevada Police Department, who was killed in 1968, and George Rogers, a Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy killed in 1866.

There are now 74 names on the memorial.
