Man arrested on bad check charge after buying cakes

Huyck, 56, was arrested Tuesday for writing bad checks at two different Tahoe-area bakeries for the purchase of three cakes at each bakery, authorities said.

Detective Bill Walton said the suspect reportedly called the Brockway Bakery on April 24 and purported to be vice president of a local business. He ordered three cakes and paid for them with a check.

The bakery owners become suspicious when the writing on the check was illegible. When they called the bank, they learned the account had been closed earlier that month, Walton said.

The same thing happened on May 1, when Huyck allegedly ordered three cakes from the Tahoe House Restaurant and paid for them with a rubber check, the detective said.

Huyck is now being held at the Placer County Jail in Tahoe City. Walton said Huyck has numerous outstanding warrants for similar crimes in various jurisdictions in California and is being held without bail.

It's unknown if those instances also involved cake.
