UNLV, college to honor graduates

UNLV and the Community College of Southern Nevada will hold graduation ceremonies next weekend at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The university's ceremonies will be on Saturday and the community college's on Sunday.

An estimated 2,300 UNLV students are expected to take part in two graduation ceremonies, one beginning at 9 a.m. and the second at 2 p.m.

Almost 800 students will receive two-year associate degrees and one-year certificates from the community college in a ceremony that will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Billie Mae Polson, the director of technical services at the James R. Dickinson Library who is retiring this spring after 40 years at UNLV, will be the grand marshal of UNLV's morning event.

English professor Felicia Campbell, who has been with the university 37 years, will be grand marshal of UNLV's afternoon ceremony.

The morning commencement will be for those graduating from the William F. Harrah college of Hotel Administration, College of Liberal Arts, College of Extended Studies, Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, College of Sciences and College of Fine Arts.

The second UNLV ceremony will be for students receiving degrees from the College of Business, College of Education, Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering and College of Health Sciences.

At the community college ceremony Sunday, Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson will be the keynote speaker.

At UNLV ceremonies, recipients of the 1999 Distinguished Nevadan Awards, honorary doctorates and the UNLV President's Medal will be recognized.

Those who will receive the Distinguished Nevadan Award include Patricia Mulroy, general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority; businessman Milton I. Schwartz and Mirage Resorts Inc. executives Stephen and Elaine Wynn.

James E. Rogers, majority owner of Sunbelt Communication Co., will receive an honorary doctor of laws degrees. A second honorary doctor of laws degree will be bestowed posthumously upon attorney Louis Wiener Jr.

Alstate Enterprises President Melvin B. Wolzinger and teacher Lucille S. Rogers will be awarded the UNLV President's Medal.

No tickets are required for the two events.

Because of ongoing construction at the Thomas & Mack Center, guests must enter the building on the northeast side, which faces the university campus.
