Letter: Government shows parasitic side

This is in response to the May 2 letters to the editor sent by flaming liberals Ray Harbert and Dan Olivier.

As an in-your-face Libertarian, for years I have challenged liberals, conservatives, and other socialists to submit information proving government's usefulness. I have more than 5 gigabytes of data (and growing) exposing government's uselessness. No believer in government has even been able to produce a measly couple of coherent pages attesting to government's effectiveness (benefits exceeding costs).

This leads to the inescapable conclusion that government is simply a parasite on the back of its productive citizens. Government's purpose should be to protect its citizens against people in government.

Maybe the reason President Clinton can commit us to a war in Yugoslavia is that we let him and Attorney General Janet Reno gas and burn 80-plus U.S. citizens in Waco and then quickly bulldoze the results.

Now Clinton talks of further disarming U.S. citizens because of 15 tragic deaths in Colorado while his bombs have been responsible for countless deaths and hundreds of thousands of refugees in an area where fighting had been local for the last 600 years.

Some things never change in politics. Maybe the words of Plato written more than 1,000 years ago will provide some insight:

"When the tyrant has disposed of foreign enemies by conquest or treaty, and there is nothing to fear from them, then he is always stirring up some war, or other, in order that the people may require a leader."
