GAY BENEFITS

County panel wants more time

County board wants more time on gay benefits plan

While the city of Las Vegas will consider a new health plan that would offer extended benefits to partners of gay workers today, a committee studying the issue for Clark County has asked for more time.

The seven-member committee is looking into whether it is wise to introduce the new benefits package as the county is preparing to adjust its premiums. It is also questioning whether the offer would be legal.

REGISTRATION

Deadline for voters looms

Voter registration for the city of Las Vegas general election on June 8 will close Saturday at 9 p.m.

Qualified voters may register for the election by appearing at the Las Vegas city clerk's office in City Hall, 400 E. Stewart Ave. Voters may also register at any branch of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, at the Clark County Election Department, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, or through a field registrar.

The city clerk and county election offices will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Field registrars will be at the Meadows mall, on Valley View Boulevard just south of U.S. 95, during mall hours on Saturday.

GUARDSMEN

Nevadans headed for central Asia

Members of the Nevada National Guard will be in central Asia next month as part of the NATO State Partnership Program.

Brig. Gen. Giles Vanderhoof, Lt. Col. Aaron Kenneston and Capt. Dave Bradford will be in Turkmenistan for a training workshop May 17-21.

The workshop will consist of a demonstration of regional and international response to a catastrophic earthquake in a major central Asian city.

FATAL CRASH

Teen may face charges

A 16-year-old resident of St. Jude's Ranch for Children may face manslaughter charges after a traffic accident that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old acquaintance Sunday, Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Scott Flabi said today.

The dead youth was identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Nicholas Lynn Quinn. The 16-year-old was not identified because of his age.

Flabi said the two boys borrowed the car from a 16-year-old girl during a party in Boulder City.

Flabi said it is believed the 16-year-old boy, who doesn't have a driver's license, was driving the 1999 Saturn northbound on U.S. 95 between Horizon Drive and Lake Mead Drive about 3:55 a.m.

The teenager denies being the driver, Flabi said.

The car made an abrupt lane change, slammed into the center median and flipped, he said.

REAL ESTATE

Office fire ruled accidental

A fire at a real estate office early this morning has been ruled accidental, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

The fire at Landbank Realty, 1404 Maryland Parkway, caused about $15,000 worth of damage, said spokesman Tim Szymanski.

Fire investigators believe the fire started near an extension cord that was supplying power to several electric appliances in the office.
