Students, teachers receive national recognition

Several Southern Nevada teachers and students were among the more than 3,500 students and teachers nationally awarded nearly $3 million by Target Stores through its All-Around and Teachers Scholarship programs.

The following local students were chosen:

Courtney Irwin of Silverado High School, D'Auria Mosley of Basic High School, Frank Farina of Cimarron-Memorial High School, Yan Huang of Advanced Technology Academy, Ryan Lewis of Las Vegas High School, Amanda Neilson of Western High School, Lorit Simon of Bonanza High School, Alissa Tibesar of Las Vegas Academy and Vanessa Hilario, Tanja Kemer, Sasa Nikolic and Thuha Vinh of Valley High School.

The following local teachers were chosen:

Lora Haney and Kelly Wright of Mack Elementary School, Mary Macioce of Cimarron-Memorial High School and Lesley Snow of Wynn Elementary School.

PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS

Two teachers honored for math, science

Sharon Dee Pearson, a science teacher at Dorothy Eisenberg Elementary School, and Candace L. Yamagata, a math teacher at Hyde Park Middle School, were named winners of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

They are among 208 teachers who will be honored in Washington, D.C., in June.

HELPFUL STUDENTS

Las Vegas Academy aids elementary schools

Las Vegas Academy was recognized for outstanding service at the Nevada Association of Student Councils' annual conference.

The school's students led activities in music, drama, and the arts for children at two local elementary schools and at the Ronald McDonald House, and they assisted with school reading programs. In addition, they collected canned food for the Ronald McDonald House and repaired the organization's playhouse.

PENNEY HONOR

Whitney center volunteer Golden Rule winner

Whitney Community Center teen volunteer Gregory Neifeld won the 1999 JC Penney Golden Rule Award in the youth category at a "Salute to Volunteers" luncheon last month.

Gregory is president of the Whitney Teen Leader program, which emphasizes community service, leadership development and social recreation.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

Valley High senior captures scholarship

Tammera White, a senior at Valley High School, has won the Southern Nevada Floorcovering Association's first Excellence in Education scholarship.

White is an all all-state soprano soloist and ensemble member and intends to major in music education at UNLV, Weber State or the University of Utah.

Several local scouts get prestigious promotions

The following young men recently earned the distinction of Eagle Scout from the Boulder Dam Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America:

Andrew James Magness, 17, of Henderson; and Justin A. Allen, 17, Michael Bittermen, 18, Robert Brill, 18, Bannion Brooks, 18, Benjamin T. Clark, 18, Marcus Dayley, 14, Jonathon King Mapel, 18, James M. Murphy, 19, Christian Pearson, 18, Brandon Stewart, 15, and Michael Sweefen, 18, all of Las Vegas.

Arianne Smith, a fifth grader at Smith Valley School, won the 1999 Nevada Arbor Day Poster Contest. Her winning entry, "Trees are Terrific for Shelter and Shade," will represent Nevada at the Arbor Day National Poster Contest in Nebraska.Haley Sortino, a second grader at Warren-Walker School, is a state champion in the National Handwriting Contest. Haley will compete for the title of National Grade Level Champion and Grand National Champion.Paul Alexander Cameron Ahmadzai of Las Vegas, a student at Grant Sawyer Middle School, has been named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy.Patrick "PC" Fleming of Las Vegas, a junior at the Meadows School, was chosen to participate in the Sony Student Project Abroad program, an international cultural exchange for high school students.Maxime A. Lambertof Henderson, a senior at Wo odberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Va., was recently inducted into the Cum Laude Society, the high school counterpart to Phi Beta Kappa.
