DMV budget package approved

The committee approved a list of budgets to fund DMV operations, as well as NDOT administration. Fiscal analyst Deb King said the budgets include $572 million for each year of the coming biennium.

Of that, the largest chunk will go to NDOT. The agency will get $437 million in the 1999-2000 fiscal year and $438 million the following year.

The DMV's share does not yet include funding for ongoing work on Project Genesis, a computer system that's intended simplify multiple DMV tasks. A separate bill seeks $8.6 million to finish the second phase and start the third phase of of the project, which has been in the works for about four years.

The money is needed to pay for overtime related to training employees to use the system, equipment and operating expenses and other implementation costs.

When complete, the system is expected to allow "one-stop shopping" for DMV customers, allowing them in some cases to bypass DMV and handle some transactions by computer.
