Reports of the UNLV softball program's demise were greatly exaggerated.
Despite headlines stating the contrary, the Rebels qualified for the Western Athletic Conference tournament in Fresno, Calif. They finished the regular season 18-29 overall and 6-16 in the WAC.
"It doesn't feel like a second life, but as the games fell into place I guess we were meant to go," coach Shan McDonald said. "We knew not to give up hope."
UNLV, the sixth and final seed, will play third-seeded Hawaii (30-19, 16-8) Thursday at noon in a first-round game. The winner of that game will play second-seeded New Mexico (42-12, 14-7) at 5 p.m.
In other UNLV softball news, four Rebels were awarded all-WAC honors on Tuesday. Shortstop Racheal Goodpaster, a sophomore, and outfielder Nicole Miller, a junior, were named to the first team.
Senior third baseman Raven Coberg and junior outfielder Erica Vollweiler were named to the second team.
