Fiesta honors prep student-athletes McLain, Appuglise

The Fiesta Casino/Hotel awarded a pair of $5,000 scholarships Tuesday to the winners of its fourth annual Scholarship Awards, with Lisa McLain of Eldorado High School and Nick Appuglise of Silverado this year's winners. The awards are given to assist the recipients' college education funding.

Criteria used to select the winners weighs heavily on academics but also factors in sports participation and extracurricular activities.

McLain, who will attend UNLV and major in computer engineering, is ranked No. 1 in her graduating class of 416 and has a grade point average of 4.0. She participated in basketball, soccer and swim teams at various times during high school, and she will test for a black belt in karate this summer.

Appuglise, who will attend UNR and major in civil engineering, is also ranked No. 1 in his class -- of 588 -- and has a GPA of 4.7. He was a varsity letter winner in track and cross country.
