Man sought in burglary

Metro police are looking for a man in connection with a burglary and possible sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl in a south Las Vegas apartment complex Tuesday morning.

"Right now we are treating it as a sexual assault, but the medical tests are not back yet," Lt. Tom Monahan said. "If it turns out that it wasn't a sexual assault we can drop that charge later."

At about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday a man burglarized an apartment in the 5800 block of West Rochelle Ave., and may have sexually assaulted the girl in her bedroom before her parents realized someone was in the house, police said.

"It's a very unusual situation with someone breaking into a house when people are home," Monahan said. "The house wasn't blackened with all the lights out so it is unusual."

The burglar fled after being discovered by the victim's parents, police said.

There have been reports that the victim screamed, bringing her parents into her room, but Monahan said that isn't the story police got from the family.

"The parents noticed something that didn't seem right to them but it wasn't necessarily their daughter screaming," Monahan said.

Police are looking for a white man in his early to mid-20s in connection with the crimes. He is believed to be 5 feet 7 inches tall, 150 pounds, has close cropped dark brown hair and brown eyes.

The man was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt with a design on the front, gray bicycle shorts and no shoes.
