Nevadans to be honored for preservation efforts

The State Historic Preservation Office will recognize Nevadans for their contributions to historic preservation 1 p.m. Sunday at Virginia City's 4th Ward School.

The award ceremony followed Archaeological Awareness and Historic Preservation week, May 9-15.

Those recognized will be:

* Dr. William Johnson, a Henderson resident and former president of the Archaeological Association, who has promoted archaeological resources in Southern Nevada and throughout the state.

* The Las Vegas Valley Water District and the Friends of Big Springs for their program to protect resources associated with Big Springs.

* The Carson-Tahoe Hospital and the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Foundation for working toward the rehabilitation and the use of the historic Adams House in Carson City.

* The State Public Works Board and the Commission on Tourism for restoring the old Federal Courthouse and Post Office in Carson City.

* William L. "Bud" and Gayle Klette for restoring numerous historic structures in Carson City's historic district.

* The city of Sparks for supporting Sparks Heritage Museum.

* The Reno-Sparks Theater Community Coalition for its work with the rehabilitation of Lear Theater.

* Volunteers from AmArcs of Nevada, an amateur archaeological organization in Northern Nevada for assisting the Comstock Historic District Commission and the Comstock Archaeological Center with the excavation of Piper's Old Corner Bar in Virginia City.

* Midas Joint Venture and the friends of Midas, who helped restore the Midas School in Elko County.

* William C. Davis, a Fallon resident who recorded historic sites in Churchill County. Davis single-handedly documented the town site of La Plata before it was decimated by private collectors.
