Fishing report -- May 19, 1999

LAKE MEAD: Fishing continues to be fair for striped bass with some of the better fishing now being reported by boaters who are fishing near the Muddy and Virgin rivers in the Overton Arm.

Anglers who are trying their luck in the Boulder Basin have found schools of stripers in deep water off Hemenway Harbor. Otherwise, there has only been scattered success in the lower basin.

The Nevada Division of Wildlife says that anglers may enjoy their best success by fishing deep with anchovies and chumming liberally.

LAKE MOHAVE: Largemouth bass fishing appears to be in full bloom as boaters are casting jigs into brush to catch the fish. An angler who was fishing in a local bass tournament over the weekend caught and released nine fish that had a combined weight of 40 pounds.

Small striped bass are being caught by boaters on the Nevada side of the Arizona Basin and by shore anglers at Willow Beach. Over the weekend a party of boaters fishing in the Arizona Basin caught six catfish with the largest weighing four pounds.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs are still producing rainbow trout while the largemouth bass fishing has yet to get under way.

Anglers fishing from the dams at the two lakes are having fair luck for stocked rainbows and an occasional fish up to 15 inches. Flies cast from float tubes and small boats have been very productive with most anglers catching around three trout per hour.
