Historic school in Virginia City awarded federal grant

The grant is part of a new national program, "Save America's Treasures," that Clinton administration officials plan to detail Wednesday in Washington.

Built in 1876, the school is a prominent part of Virginia City's National Historic Landmark District.

"The Fourth Ward School is a link to the colorful history of the Comstock and the opulence of Virginia City at its peak," Reid said.

The grant will be used to repair the roof and original windows as well as to retrofit the foundation to prevent damage from earthquakes.
